Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit - Review
Hey Ya'll! I have some really exciting news, Little Miss has started sleeping through the night!
We transitioned Little Miss into her crib when she turned 4 months old. Since the recommendation is to share a room until 7 months, in order to reduce the risk of SIDS, I have been sleeping on the twin bed in her room.
I will say this over and over again, all children are different. There is rarely a one-size-fits-all way of doing anything when it comes to parenting. For instance, at 4 months Mr. Feef's was breaking out of his swaddle and self soothing (just like the books said he should be). Transitioning him to the crib was easy and I never had to do anything aside from giving him his paci and turning on the sound machine.
Fast forward to Little Miss. She turned 4 months old and was starting to break out of her swaddle. Well... I thought, this looks very familiar! I took her out of her swaddle and tried sleep training. Just as we had done with Mr. Feef's. It did not work. She was constantly pulling out her paci and frantically trying to put it back in. She was a mess. So I swaddled her and she fell asleep immediately. She has not been able to self soothe even at 5 months. Her pediatrician and all of the books I have read said that at 4 months babies are capable of self soothing. They also start forming bad habits at this age. No pressure though right?!
The swaddle did not last even when I bought the larger size, she was still able to get out of it. I needed another solution. I jumped onto other mom blogs and youtube channels searching for the answer. Then my friend Shannon Kerlin was using the Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. Her daughter was doing great with it. I decided to check it out. I was kind of nervous to be honest, not only does it look bulky and hot it is $40. That is an expensive onesie if it doesn't work! So, I waited a few days. Then one night when the swaddle wasn't working and neither of us were sleeping, I made the plunge. I jumped on amazon and ordered it. Praise Jesus for same day delivery through amazon prime! The sleep suit was delivered that afternoon before bed time!
This is where it gets good ya'll!
I put Little Miss in the Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit (really, could they have come up with an easier name?!) and laid her down, wide awake! I gave her the paci and made sure her sound machine was on. I walked down stairs, turned on the baby monitor, and she was asleep! I ran back upstairs because I was afraid something had happened to her. There was no way she could already be asleep!? Yep...she sure as shit was! haha! Not only did she fall asleep right away but she slept for 10 hours. TEN HOURS YA'LL! Hallelujah!
What is the Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit?! It definitely looks like it turns your sweet little one into a marshmallow :) There are two versions, microfleece and a cotton. We went with the cotton since we live in Texas and it is basically summer time! It muffles the baby's morrow reflex that keeps them from falling asleep and staying that way.
How to use the sleep suit I did not wash the sleep suit when it was delivered. Mama needed some sleep ya'll! Ain't nobody got time for that... heres why! You can wash the suit however, it is recommended that you hang it to dry. This takes a better part of the day! Little Miss wore it for a week before I felt the need to wash it. I will typically wash and line dry first thing in the morning. With that said, I have stuck it in the dryer. It shrunk a tiny bit but not much at all. So, if the suit is big, or you don't have time to sit around and wait, go ahead and throw it in your dryer. Little Miss does not need to wear pajamas, just a diaper! We keep her room pretty cool, another recommendation to prevent SIDS, and we haven't had any issues with her getting too hot.
Update: 6 months old Little Miss has been using the sleep suit for about a month now. We still love it as much as we did that first night. She still has restless nights from time to time. Especially when her developmental leaps cause her to wake up for an extra feeding in the middle of the night. I love that the sleep suit has helped mitigate her morrow reflex and has enabled her to learn how to self soothe. Little Miss is now able to rub her eyes and face without smacking herself uncontrollably. I am excited to see how she does in the future! I will update once she outgrows this suit. I am not sure if we will need to buy the bigger size or if Little Miss will be able to sleep freely without any aides.
Update Number 2: 7 months old Little Miss has finally transitioned out of her sleep suit. It was bittersweet for us, we loved our little starfish! However, I am so happy she has learned how to fall asleep without it and when she wakes up in the middle of the night can put herself back to sleep! High-five Mama's!! We had to wean her off of it. We started with nap time. She was rolling all over the place at first, but once her new found freedom wore off, she would calmed down and go to sleep. It worked wonders for us, so if you are having a tough time, check it out! All babies are different so it really is about finding what works best for you! Sweet dreams Mama! <3
